When viewed from space, Mt. Taranaki is almost perfectly circular. It is an cone-shaped, extinct volcano that towers above the surrounding plain. How it rises above the local countryside is one of the most striking things about it and you can see that from this picture. This was taken on the way up the mountain as later in the day it completely clouded up.
